The Art of Why - Giving Away Power Matters More Than Ever in 2025

Published 03.02.2025

Any leader in hospitality who’s been paying attention knows this year could be a rocky one. Recruitment, cost of goods, wage pressures, and getting bums in seats—these are just a few of the challenges we’re facing.

So the question isn’t just “how” we navigate them, but “WHY” we need to rethink leadership in the process.

One key shift? “Give your teams the power to do what they do best.”

As leaders, we can’t afford to get bogged down in the day-to-day. We need to focus on the big picture—strategy, guest experience, financial sustainability—while trusting our teams to handle the details.

When we empower them:

  1. They take ownership, making smarter, faster decisions.

  2. They feel valued, increasing retention and morale.

  3. They become problem-solvers, reducing the need for top-down management.

  4. They elevate the guest experience through authentic, engaged service.

  5. MOSST IMPORTANTLY - They gain skills that prepare them for leadership roles—both in hospitality and beyond. Confidence in decision-making, adaptability, and ownership don’t just help at work; they translate into personal growth, career progression, and life skills.

Most importantly, THEY HELP US THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES. No one person has all the answers, but a team that feels trusted and heard will help navigate any storm.

HOWEVER, there’s a key distinction—delegation is not abdication. (I learned this the hard way)

Giving away power doesn’t mean stepping back completely or leaving your team without direction. It means equipping them with the tools, trust, and accountability to succeed while staying engaged as a leader. A great team thrives when leadership is present but not controlling.

So, as we move through 2025, the real question is: “Are we holding onto power too tightly, or should we delegate in a way that helps our teams—and our businesses—thrive?”

Would love to hear your thoughts. Why are you leading differently this year?
